Online Customer Innovation and Ventures Manager

I work in Innovations and Ventures, which is the IT department responsible for building and maintaining Air New Zealand’s customer facing internet applications.

These include our online booking engine, Grabaseat, myairnz and the website content management system. The team is made up of some really smart and talented individuals and the work we do is always interesting and challenging.

Where did your journey start?

I started with Air New Zealand as a Project Manager in 2004. I’d just returned from the UK where I’d been working as a project manager in a large multinational company delivering software for the financial markets. I found the move to Air New Zealand a really positive change. The teams were really engaged and everyone was committed to successful delivery.

Where’s your journey taken you so far within Air New Zealand?

Working at Air New Zealand has given me the opportunity to work on some really interesting projects and also progress my career. Within a couple of years I was promoted to a Programme Lead and then moved into Innovations and Ventures to work exclusively on the online channel, delivering projects including Grabaseat and myairnz. I then took a two year secondment as the Technology Manager in an Air New Zealand joint venture start up. Following this, I returned to Air New Zealand to take up the position as Manager of the Online Customer area of Innovation and Ventures. This involves managing the delivery teams for our customer facing applications including Grabaseat, myairnz and the website content management system amongst other things.

Where do you hope your journey will take you?

I’m actually really happy where I am at present. I get to work with some really stimulating people and get to be involved with delivering some great software.

What Air New Zealand value do you feel you best represent and why?

I think it would be “Welcome as a Friend”.  Our team has grown from about 10 to over 90 people so one of our challenges with this growth is to maintain a connection with the people we work with.  We’ve managed to grow and maintain a positive work culture where people genuinely enjoy coming to work.

What’s the best story you’ve been able to tell after a day at work?

The best stories are about the applications we deliver and being able to have people use them on our website. The Air New Zealand website has phenomenal exposure, so the systems we deliver are actively used by my family, my friends and even my parents so they all know exactly what I do.
