Describing a typical day for a Flight Attendant is almost impossible. Every day presents different people (both your colleagues and your customers) and different destinations.
The most important aspect of the job is the safety of your passengers, your fellow crew and of course yourself. Flight Attendants are highly trained in safety and security so that in the very unlikely event of something going wrong, you are prepared to take action.
Another key aspect of your role as a Flight Attendant is Customer Service. The variety in your daily role is endless. From serving meals, to assisting someone with their onward travel plans, to relieving a frustrated mother of her crying baby, to helping a tourist plan their holiday in New Zealand.
The role brings out your can do attitude, your natural friendliness and plenty of opportunity to just be yourself.

For NZ based positions only indefinite permanent New Zealand residents and citizens will be considered including those born outside New Zealand. You must reside in New Zealand at the time of application.Drivers License
For NZ based positions we require the minimum of a New Zealand restricted or Australian full drivers license. Our shifts can start as early as 3am and finish after midnight. As a responsible employer we require all cabin crew applicants to have a drivers license to be able to get themselves to work and home outside of normal business hours.Age
The minimum age requirement is 18 years, due to the Sale of Liquor Act amendment.Passport
Applicants require a current passport allowing unrestricted access to all Air New Zealand destinations, with an expiry date of a minimum of two years from the date of your application.Health
Good health is essential and if you progress through the selection process, you will be required to undertake a medical examination.Height
Applicants must be able to reach overhead emergency equipment and this will be specifically tested for capability during the selection process. Applicants must be able to lift a 10kg weight to a height of 170cm without shoes and with both feet flat on the floor.
Where concerns exist that a candidate may be too tall to complete continuous flight attendant activities in the aircraft environment; a functional assessment will be required before the applicant can proceed to medical clearance.Eye Sight
Your unaided vision must be sufficient for you to perform all flight attendant safety related duties in an emergency. If you wear glasses or contact lenses you will need to provide your most recent optometrist's report which must be no older that one year and which details your corrected and uncorrected visual acuity.
You must be able to achieve 6/12 or better in each eye and if correction is required to achieve this; then your uncorrected vision must be must be 6/60 or better using both eyes together.
For applicants who have had LASER surgery; medical clearance will not be provided for until a full three months has passed since the surgery. Applicants will be required to provide documentary evidence of the date and type of surgery undertaken and confirmation from the surgeon/optometrist that their visual acuity at three months post surgery meets the required standards.Personal Attributes

Flight Attendants must have a practical and mature approach to all situations and be able to work well in a team environment. Communication skills are most important, along with the ability to deliver service in a relaxed and refined manner. Vitality, resourcefulness, enthusiasm and flexibility are also attributes we search for in candidates. Naturally, the ability to relate to all customers from a diverse range of cultures is a key prerequisite for this position.Security

We have a minimum requirement of three years secondary education, with a preference for applicants who have successfully completed further education and/or any vocational study.First Aid
To work as a Flight Attendant you are required to have a current First Aid certificate.Swimming Ability
Successful applicants will be required to demonstrate their ability to swim 50m unaided and will also be able to climb into a life raft unaided.section top
Long flights, time zone changes, lifting luggage and galley equipment combined with extended periods on your feet are all aspects of the job which are physically demanding. The impact on social and family life can be significant. Flight times vary dependent on the crew group anything from 6 to 20 hours; these can potentially extend where there are flight disruptions. Working through weekends and public holidays is regularly required.section top
Special attention is given to the cultural and language needs especially relating to the Airline's key markets such as China, Japan, Europe and Pacific Islands. A second language is preferred and priority will be given to applicants who are fluent in Japanese, Cantonese, Mandarin, German, French and the languages of the South Pacific. Flight Attendants with language skills are tested, and may be rostered on the appropriate routes.Customer Service and Service Industry Experience
Our customers are our highest priority, therefore we seek to recruit Flight Attendants who have enjoyed working in and have excelled at customer contact positions. Experience could be in restaurants, hotels, hospitality, retail or other positions that involve a strong customer service focus.
The position will often involve meeting the requirements of guests with special needs, such as the elderly, children and infants, the sick and people with physical disabilities.section top

When we are actively recruiting we will contact all registered candidates by email and invite you to a Flight Attendant Recruitment Event. Please ensure you arrive no later than 20 minutes before your invitation time to allow the event to run to schedule. When you receive this invitation you will receive a 'Declaration Form' to complete and bring with you to the event. This form will include reference to declaring criminal convictions and details of any tattoos/body art you may have in accordance with our Uniform Policy. If you declare a Tattoo please be aware that if it is clear to us on the day that your Tattoo cannot be covered by our slightest uniform offering, unfortunately you will not be progressed to an interview. If we need further clarification you may be asked to provide a photo at a later stage of the recruitment process clearly showing the size and location of your Tattoo. This will help us clarify whether the tattoo can be covered by the current slightest Uniform offering. We have this policy in place to ensure customer facing employees meet our uniform guidelines and to ensure all Air New Zealand passengers feel comfortable when traveling with us.
On arrival at the Recruitment event you will be asked to register your attendance, and then be invited to 'Mix and Mingle' with fellow candidates and Air New Zealander's before a brief presentation from Air New Zealand about the role.
Following the presentation we will break you up into smaller groups for a 'Get to know you' assessment, and potentially following this you will be invited to a mini 1:1 interview. Candidates who are successful past this point will be asked to attend a final interview shortly after. Following the final interview if your application is being progressed you will be required to complete an online assessment.
Before attending a final interview candidates are required to have confirmation of visual acuity. Post final interviews candidates will start the rigorous vetting process, and will be asked to complete a swimming assessment and to book themselves into a first aid training course. There is a small cost attached to completing these which you will need to meet.
As part of the assessment and vetting process, you are required to undertake pre-employment checking, including Air New Zealand contacting your referees, completing a medical check, a Ministry of Justice check (Police and Courts), an Aviation Security check and a number of other associated checks.section top
If you are successful through to our training stage, please be aware that your offer of employment is conditional on you successfully passing our Flight Attendant training.
The training location will be dependent on what network you have been successful to fly for.
Our training course will cover an array of topics and modules that will assist you in your career as a Flight Attendant as well as the opportunity to work towards a Certificate in Aviation (Flight Attendant) Level 4.section top
Upon graduation from training, inflight performance reviews are carried out regularly to ensure standards continue to be met. Opportunities can and do arise for promotion, to obtain a promotion we encourage Flight Attendants to consistently display a strong sense of customer service, leadership and business acumen.
All Flight Attendants in Air New Zealand report to a Crew Manager. It is both your responsibility and your manager's responsibility to coordinate regular meetings, and this can be challenging due to a rostered shift.section top
All uniforms are provided and Flight Attendants are expected to maintain all the Company's grooming and uniform regulations. A high standard of presentation in uniform is expected at all times. A Flight Attendant's personal presentation and grooming should reflect a professional, sophisticated image for the Airline. The first impression of a Flight Attendant should always convey a friendly, natural, pleasant personality possessing confidence and warmth.
